Its why we took our kids to West Virginia (the bunker at the Greenbrier, coal mines, their incredibly weird craft center in tamarack, rhododendron forests) and Kentucky (Berea craft college, shaker village) and indiana (the miller house which everyone needs to see because it is an essay on modernism itself). I can't say it influenced my design per se but now three little boys know how to find a good antiques store
I had high hopes. The building itself was from the 90s but felt like a sort of carousel/70s LA diner with a central courtyard and pointed spires. There are crafts from all over the area, some very modest. Interesting that blenko glass and fiestaware (from there) feel more mass market but a Heath ceramics is more rarified. Worth a stop!
So here’s a funny thing… I grew up in an Orthodox church and those candles have a ton of meaning to me. I used to stand around coating my hands in their wax and then make little animals from them when I was super bored in church. It never occurred to me to buy them for my house but I’ve just been influenced to. But when I sit around letting wax drip on me, my mind will be miles away from the internet, in memory land smelling the beeswax from my childhood.
David! I hope you had some wonderful time off (looked fantastical). I was thinking about your writing the other day... I missed reading! I always learn so much from your articles and am entertained along the way - the sign of a gifted writer and thinker. Loved your dive into inspiration v. influence. And really just love the intellectual pursuit and questioning of decor as a subject. Feels so fresh. Lots of love and hope the upcoming project with Coco is going well.
